I have recently been updating an old win 98 (gateway computer) and I
did a restore using and old packard utility ( long story short the
orginal hard drive died - i took it from another machine that was a
packard bell) it worked but i had other problems so i went back to
orginal settings. Anyways i ended up doing one last restore and decided
that that was the best i could do ( ie last restore was back to an
older setting) I know have 2 problems one is this code "DDCML.DLL."
Unfortunately i have lost or misplaced my win 98 cd i need it for a
utility to fix this problem. any ways The second problem is the most
important my windows 98 screen saver 3d maze keeps crashing for no
reason, as for as in know it does even start, it i think tries to start
then crashes and freezes and the only way to get the computer to work
is to toggle it off and on again. Again im sorry for such a long
e-mail. I thank you for any help, i am new here. Thanks Chris

This is not part of a WIn98SE standard installation.

Uninstall your screen saver, and then if you wish, after checking for
updates, reinstall it.

First, go to the Microsoft update site and make sure you have all the
updates installed if this is Win98SE.

Don't recognize that file name. Did you perhaps mean DDEML.DLL instead?

I know have 2 problems one is this code "DDCML.DLL."
That is not a Windows-98 file.

Search that computer for that file.

If it exists, then go to this web site:

http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html

Click on the Browse button and navigate to the location of that file
and select it, then hit enter, then hit the SEND button on that page
beside the Browse button.

That file will be checked to see if it is a virus/trojan/worm.

Please report back here the results of that scan.

DDEML.DLL that is the file i am having trouble with, im going to see if
i can fix this first. So anyway to find out if i upgraded the computer
to win98SE or not? I was having troubles getting the computer to read
files off my win98SE cd. It shows the CD in the drive and everything
just when you need to get drivers for the computer it don't like it.
Thanks so far all the ideas , The screen saver still baffels me, i will
keep working on it .
Thanks Again Chris

The file ddeml.dll is contained in WIN98_28.CAB - Version 4.10.1998 so
extract that to:
Windows\System

The file has been updated though - Version 4.10.1998 with a newer date
04-23-99 10:22 PM in my system.

To find out what version of Windows:

Start button > Run > type in, MSINFO32.EXE - which tells you your version
at the top of the System Information screen.

The file ddeml.dll is contained in WIN98_28.CAB - Version
4.10.1998 so extract that to: Windows\System
It will also probably exist in windows\setup and windows\sysbckup
where it might be easier to get at vs the CD.

The file has been updated though - Version 4.10.1998
Which is probably the Win-98 "gold" version

Apparently that is correct. As the version of Windows 98 was unknown, the
intent was to give the querier the version numbers [the same] with the
dates, both are 32Kb. I guessed FE/Gold or upgrade version for the installed
version as Win98SE users generally seem to be aware of their newer system.
Either way, it should hopefully suffice for an answer.

Likely the Windows\Setup is not available, though Windows\Options\Cabs may
be; whereas, the Windows\Sysbackup would not necessarily be there [with the
ddeml.dll] unless an upgrade was made, or at least as I see it. I did not
find it in any normal Microsoft update/fixes to SE.

My system is a "native" se install (ie it was installed from an 98SE
cd and not upgraded from a 98 FE installation).

As such, I have the same version of ddeml.dll located in:

\windows\system
\windows\setup
\windows\sysbckup

The version I have (in all 3 locations) is, strangely, 4.10.1998,
although the file date for all 3 is 4/23/1999.

Perhaps I've deleted them, but I have no cab files in my
\windows\options\cabs directory. ?

| My system is a "native" se install (ie it was installed from an 98SE
| cd and not upgraded from a 98 FE installation).

The upgrade version happens to be my route.

|
| As such, I have the same version of ddeml.dll located in:
|
| \windows\system
| \windows\setup
| \windows\sysbckup
|
| The version I have (in all 3 locations) is, strangely, 4.10.1998,

|
| Perhaps I've deleted them, but I have no cab files in my
| \windows\options\cabs directory. ?

Its the same version just a different date reflecting the OS date.

The Options\Cabs is/was a standard recommendation by many previously, and
used by several computer manufacturers/builders.
Your setup folder presumably comes from your retail full version install,
which many MIGHT have removed looking for more space.
Off-times the Options folder was hidden [and possibly system] negating
necessity for a separate hidden partition. I used to put this hidden
directory on every computer, adding it to the registry, if not already
there. I think I picked up the habit from HPs I worked on.. maybe not..

The hope was by indicating the cab number and other, the query could be
answered with minimum explanation and reasonable chance of success. Also,
hopefully indicating that its easier to install from the hard drive than
from the CDROM. [HINT: put the cabs in a folder called Options\Cabs and then
look there..]

Oh well, here I am explaining my motives, so much for short answers...
