Jen, running SFC is not likely to help you, as it is only as smart as its reference
database.....and if you have not manually updated that database every time you have
installed or uninstalled new programs, SFC can do you more harm than good.
Providing the info in the Details of EACH error message would be helpful, as well as
when they occur. When you get each "illegal operation" error message, click the
"Details" button, and post back with the EXACT details word for word, up to but not
including the memory registers.
You will not find Winsock files online for Win98....it was only a separate download
for Win95. WS2_32.DLL is included with Win98, and the fact that you are getting an
error involving it shows that it is not missing. You can replace it with a fresh
copy from your Windows CD or from the .cab file location on your hard drive if they
are copied there, using the "Extract one file" option of System File Checker
(SFC).....although I do not think that is your problem.

The fact that you uninstalled AOL indicates that you may have done damage to
Internet Explorer. Since IE is an integrated part of the Windows shell, problems
with IE can manifest in errors in the Explorer shell as well. Which version of IE
do you have installed.... IE 5.x or IE 6.x? The first thing I would try is a repair
of IE:
Click Start>Run, type the following and click Enter, for IE5x:
RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE5Maintenance
or this, if you have IE6x installed:
RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE6Maintenance
Choose the Repair option, and continue.
(It is easier to copy and paste the appropriate line above into the Run dialog,
rather than manually typing it)
If the repair says it cannot complete, or it does not fix the problem, reinstall
Internet Explorer:

You may also need to run LSPFix to repair the Winsock entries in the Registry:

Please post back with the exact error message details and when they occur, as I
mentioned above.

Post by Jen2345Thank you. I will give it a try when I get home. Will I be able to run
explorer after the kernel32 file is corrected or after running SFC? I can't
get online to get to the winsock2 controls on the website until I am able to
get back online.????? I'm hoping to not have to reinstall Windows but my
disks are on the way(left them behind) just in case.

Post by Jure SahPost by Jen2345The first error is the kernel32.dll and pops up upon startup for VSMON(my
current antivirus/firewall through CA). I get the WS2-32.dll module error
for EXPLORER and CAVTRAY(again for CA program). Also get the module
<unknown> error with EXPLORER and kernel32.dll for MEDIC(road runner medic).
The main problem obviously is explorer and hopefully that will resolve my
connection issues and other errors.???
WS2-32.dll are the Winsock2 controls. You can reinstall those as they
are not included in Windows 98 by default (download them from the
microsoft website).
An error in the kernel indicates a program is incorectly installed. If
this was something AOL that you removed, I am not suprized. You can try
running the program called "SFC" (start -> run -> sfc) it should restore
any system files that got destroyed in the process (but it's not
particularly automated, so clicking the wrong buttons might restore
nothing).
The main problem isn't exporer. Explorer is a program that combines many
plugins in Windows 98, if you're not eager to reinstall the OS, try
fixing your software and the plugins they offer first.
