System was hanging right after the desktop screen came up after stating up.
Had to power off.
After some research, found that name occurred in 5 files, one of which was
winoa386.mod.
I took a chance on renaming the file with a different extension name in Safe
Mode. Restarted in normal mode and everything seems to work okay.
Would like to know what program calls WINOLDAP?
Why did renaming the file seem to solve the problem
Thanks loads,

Search "winoa386.mod"; Windows 98; Filtered; Full Text; All Words;
Anytime; comes up with two. Both suggest you need a "Winoa386.mod" as
say how to get one back. Post back, if doing so brings back the original
problem.

• Cannot Start a Command Prompt or Restart in MS-DOS Mode
(195176) - When you try to start a command prompt in Windows, or restart
your computer in MS-DOS mode, or start an MS-DOS-based program, you may
receive one or more of the following error messages: Windows cannot find
MS-DOS Prompt.pif. This program is...

That first article fails to mention there won't be a "winoa386.mod" in
the .cab's; it will be "Winoa386.new".

• Err Msg: A Device Attached to the System Is Not Functioning
(139434) - When you try to run a Microsoft Visual Basic 3.0 program in
Windows, or try to start an MS-DOS session, you may receive the
following error message: A device attached to the system is not
functioning When you click OK, the program or the MS-DOS...
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;139434

That second article fails to mention that, in Win98SE...
"Winoa386.new" is inside "WIN98_51.CAB", not the same as for FE.

It does say to Extract the ".new" to C:\Windows\System, & then Rename it
to ".mod".

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,
